The City Park
Almost within the centre of Maribor there is the City Park - a
place for strolls, walking, relaxing and enjoying the fresh air and
forgetting stresses of the day. The Park is divided in two halfs
by the Promenade. At its beginning there is a square-shaped monument,
carved from grey marble and dedicated to the combatants for the
northern border. The Promenade is lined with nicely spaced flower beds and
unobtrusive lamp-posts. To the left one can see children's playground,
with a small pool and fountain and to the right there are sections
planted in 1872 with exotic trees. The Park boasts some 99 different
species of trees that are convenienly tagged. There is a famous Aquarium
and the large gazebo, where musical activities ("Sundays' Promenade Concertos")
are held.
The Promenade ends at Trije ribniki
(The Three Ponds) and along and after them the area is attractivelly
landscaped. There are several 10 to 20 minutes strolls to neighbour hills,
like Piramida with memorial chapel, built on the site of the
former pyramid and constructed out of the castle's ruins, or Kalvarija
(Calvary Hill) with the Chapel of St. Barbara, built in 1681 to commemorate
the lifting of the plague
that has devastated the town a year before.
People of Maribor are very proud of their Park, especially as it is
always open (there are no gates and controled entries like in
many parks in Europe). On sunny days it is very crowded and who knows
how many romances started here and how many first-kisses were given
in the shadows of its exotic trees and bushes.
