Abstract: I shall argue that machines are not necessarily constructed by man, to faci- litate life, but that life avails of even better (organic) machines, without a constructor, and so does the inorganic Universe. For a better understanding of cosmic processes, it is essential to thoroughly understand their functioning. Among the most important examples are terrestrial volcanism, stellar winds, stellar explosions, the shape and size of the heliosphere, gravitati- onal shear flows, the cosmic-ray boosters, the gamma-ray bursters, and the astrophysical jet engines (on all scales). Needless to say, black holes do not qualify, nor are they any more expected: Naked singularities have taken their place.
