Abstract Hydrodynamics is usually used to describe low-energy physics, such as the behaviour of gases and fluids. The structure of hydrodynamics is, however, much more widely applicable. It can be used in particle physics to describe, for example, the collec- tive behaviour of quark-gluon plasmas, or in general relativity, to understand the gravitational fluctuations near a black hole horizon. In my talk, I will present some of these fascinating facets of hydrodynamics, with particular focus on high-energy physics. I will first discuss its description in terms of effective field theory and then move towards string theory. By introducing the AdS/CFT correspondence, I will discuss the unique window onto strongly coupled hydrodynamics that string theory has provided.
