Abstract: A functional identity is an identical relation involving arbitrary functions on a ring. The goal is to describe the form of these functions, or, when this is not possible, to describe the structure of the ring in question. Functional identities have turned out to be applicable to various mathematical areas, in particular to Lie theory. In the talk we will give a short and informal survey of the theory of functional identities and its applications.
