Abstract: In this talk, we will discuss some results, due to G. D. Birkhoff and J. Moser, which allow us to determine a normal form for a nonlinear (in general) dynamical system of a particular type. Namely, we will consider a Hamiltonian system of one degree of freedom having a hyperbolic saddle point in the phase space and we will see that under a suitable change of coordinates this system is transformed to a simpler one that is locally solvable. Moreover, we will apply these results to some toy models and then we will see (briefly) a modern application, due to S. L. Ziglin.
