Abstract How many animated planets or moons are there in the Universe, orbiting around suitable stars in suitable galaxies? Not very many. In order to get a quantitative answer, we have to understand the conditions for life, its formation and evolution. Guided by the anthropic principle and by the crucial role of water (as the transport medium) for terrestrial life, it will be argued that there may not be another civilization similar to ours, circulating around any of the hundred billion stars in the Milky Way right now.
