Abstract: What forces push the 12 or more terrestrial plates around, at average speeds of several cm/yr, via discrete displacement events which occur within seconds, are accompanied by the outflow of lava and hot fountains, and repeat after decades? And what (different) forces cause the beltwise super- and sub-rotations of the solar convection zone, and of the (outer) atmospheres of all the planets (except Mercury)? The answers will involve buoyancy, magnetic torques, and thermally induced tidal torques.
