EVOLUTION OF THE BIOSPHERE

Abstract: Has life reached Earth from outer space, a possibility that has been pioneered by Fred Hoyle under the name of `panspermia?, or has it evolved on Earth, starting either in its oceans, or in its crust? The five books: COSMOGENESIS [David Layzer, 1990], BORN FROM DUST [Christian de Duve, 1995], LIFE'S GRANDEUR [Stephen J. Gould, 1997], ORIGINS OF LIFE [Freeman Dyson, 1999], and THE DEEP HOT BIOSPHERE [Thomas Gold, 1999] give pairwise different answers to these questions. The correct answer may be a compromise between these five approaches.
