Abstract:
We discuss our recent theoretical results on Bose-Einstein
condensates (BECs), made of alkali-metal atoms, in optical traps.
At zero temperature, the dynamics of a BEC is accurately
described by a time-dependent matter-wave equation,
the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE).
By numerically solving the GPE we have investigated
the bouncing and tunneling of a BEC through an optical barrier [1],
the periodic emission of BEC pulses from an optical cavity [2], and
the Josephson currents of a BEC in a double-well optical potential
with oscillating height [2,3].
The relevance of our results for experiments
is pointed out.
