Abstract:
Bispectral analysis, based on high order statistics, is used to reveal
frequency and phase relationships among the characteristic oscillations
in cardiovascular signals. It is applicable to univariate data for which
it allows one to obtain information about phase and/or frequency
couplings between the oscillators. The method is modified in order to
obtain time evolution of the phases. Using this technique, couplings
between the cardiac, respiratory and myogenic processes, with
characteristic frequencies of 1Hz, 0.2Hz and 0.1Hz
respectively, are studied. Episodes of linear couplings between the
respiratory and myogenic and the cardiac and myogenic processes, and
quadratic couplings between the cardiac and the respiratory processes
will be shown and discussed.
