Abstract: By calculating the Poincaré sections and the traces of
the deviation matrix,
we investigate the chaotic behavior of several classes of lemon shaped
planar
billiards in dependence on the shape parameter. Similar
methods are also
applied to a large class of billiards with discontinuities in the curvature
of the boundary,
including the elliptical stadium and a new family of
parabolic oval
billiards. The stability of some important periodic orbits
determining the phase
space structure is calculated, and their effect on the separation of the
chaotic region into
several chaotic components is discussed. Some results concerning the
comparison of classical
and quantum results are presented.
