Abstract: Most of the interesting and important events in fluctuating systems (e.g. escape from an attractor) arise through large rare fluctuations. These can now be studied experimentally, and related to the large body of Hamiltonian fluctuation theory, through use of the prehistory probability distribution [1]. The existence of an optimal fluctuational force has been confirmed [2]. Recent studies have illuminated the way in which escape occurs from a chaotic attractor, and have solved the optimal control problem via direct measurement of the optimal force [3], which can be identified with the deterministic optimal control function in the absence of fluctuations.
