Bose-Einstein Condensation and Fermi Degeneracy for Trapped Gases at Ultra-Low Temperatures

Abstract: For dilute alkali-metal atoms in magnetic or magneto-optical traps at ultra-low temperatures (micro Kelvin), the Bose-Einstein condensation has been achieved in 1995 and the Fermi quantum degeneracy in 1999. These experiments have renewed the theoretical investigation of Bose and Fermi gases. After a brief historical introduction, we discuss some theoretical results we have recently obtained with trapped degenerate quantum gases at zero and finite temperature.
