THE PHYSICS OF MASSIVE DISKS

Professor Dr. Wolfgang Kundt
Institut für Astrophysik, Universität Bonn
Bonn, Germany

Abstract: Disks are abundant in the Universe, in the form of protostellar disks (with starand/or planet formation), accretion disks around binary white dwarfs and binary neutron stars, and of galactic disks. For a gaseous disk with a fixed gravita- tional potential, standard theory derives a diffusion equation that governs its viscous evolution towards a stationary spiralling-in of matter from its outer edge to its center. Unknown is the situation for heavy disks, except that their kinetic energy is minimal for rigid rotation, and that singular clumping is prevented for polytropic equations of state with index > 4/3. This leaves a wide margin for clumping, main-sequence nuclear burning, shrinking to white-dwarf densities, and for nuclear detonations which offer themselvesfor a description of nuclear activity in galactic centers, and of black-hole candidates among the most compact X-ray binaries.

Seminarsko predavanje bo v cetrtek 8. aprila 2004 ob 15:15 uri v seminarski sobi CAMTP, Krekova 2, pritlicje desno. Vljudno vabljeni vsi zainteresirani, tudi študentje.
